Algebra 1

Content Skills

Principle of Light Spider Worksheet

I feel that over this first semester of Algebra 1 I have mastered the principle of light. The principle of light is applied in real life when measuring very tall objects such as trees or telephone poles. You place a mirror in between you and the object where you can see the object being measured in the mirror. You can measure the distance between you and the mirror and the mirror to the object. You need to know the hight of the eyes of the person measuring. Knowing these three variables you set up a proportion. The proportion being distance of mirror to person over distance of mirror to object is equal to height of person over X. You cross multiply and end up with the value of X, which is your object. I feel that this skill is useful. You can apply it in both your math work and in real life when measuring a tall object is needed.

This worksheet had us use the principle of light to find out the hight of the Momma, Uncle, Baby, and Granddaddy spider.

Problem-Solving Skills

During this semester I believe that I came close to mastering generating ideas. In our POW 5 we had to figure out the amount of slices of pie you could get using a specific number of cuts. I drew out many circles and drew lines across them to figure out the answer I needed. Along with drawing the circles I copied down the in-out table we were given to try to use it to find a pattern. I used both the in-out table and the drawing methods to come up with an answer. I used my skills of generating ideas to create different ways of solving this problem.

Cookies Unit

Cookies Unit Cover Letter
Over the past few months we have been working on a unit that covers a variety of topics. This “Cookies Unit” gave us the problem of the Woo’s and their bakery. We had to find the maximum amount of supplies and time the Woo family could use in their bakery by using constraints and graphing with feasible regions. We worked on graphing and systems of equations. We worked on graphing calculators often which I found fun and helpful.
We learned a range of things but my favorite would be graphing and feasible regions. Learning graphing calculators was useful and a concept that was easy to catch onto. To answer the question for the Woo’s of how many cookies and how much money they could make was easier to figure out by using feasible regions. By using the constraints, graphs, and feasible regions, I was able to find the maximum profit and maximum supplies and time used.
I feel that I have grown a lot in this semester. Personally I have learned many new and useful skills during this unit. I’ve learned more than I have in the past just by using systems of equations, graphing, and feasible region. I enjoy math a lot more than I used too and I hope in the future I can apply my learning experience.
